Introduction

An important contemporary issue in biology deals with environmental issues. A great deal of information is provided from a wealth of sources. What and how much of it is information versus disinformation? We will explore some of these issues and how organisms are related to one another.

I have included a list of major concepts, some detail you should be familiar with and some links to numerous sites which will allow you to view, download or print material which is directly related to these concepts. In addition there may be some material which is of interest to you (hey you never know!).

The links will assist you if you run into any difficulties and have specific questions.

Major Concepts

Taxonomy
  1. Primary taxonomic classifications.
  2. Classification of species in local ecosystem.
  3. Classification of humans and one other species.
Agriculture
  1. Bioamplification as it relates to pesticide use.
  2. Is it realistic to expect farmers not to use pesticides?
  3. What are some alternatives and are they financially possible for farmers
Biogeochemical Cycles
  1. Carbon, Nitrogen, Water
Population Dynamics
  1. Definition and influences.
  2. Carrying capacity.
  3. Symbiotic relationships with examples.
Canadian Biomes
  1. Names and describe each (tundra, taiga, grasslands, temperate rain forest, and deciduous).
